Foundation for the Development of Diabetes Care

For Quality of Life and Disease Prevention
Effective diabetes management and prevention is about behavior modification which needs multi-disciplinary teamwork. Team composes of physician and other medical personnel such diabetes educator, dietitian, foot care specialist, and exercise specialist with patient as the center.
The first diabetes team in Thailand was formed in 1985 at Theptarin Hospital by Professor Dr. Thep Himathongkam. The Theptarin diabetes team currently serves as a model to health care facilities throughout Thailand.
As formal training of diabetes team key members such dietitian, diabetes educator, foot care specialist, and exercise specialist are not yet in place, Thailand lacks supply of these personnel to multiply the number of diabetes teams thus team-approach in diabetes care service is currently not easily accessible.
Foundation for the Development of Diabetes Care was founded in 2001 by Prof. Dr. Thep Himathongkam with the purpose of raising the standard of diabetes care in Thailand and making the care widely-known and accessible to population throughout Thailand. Its work involves various activities that would support personnel development. Example of past activities include awarding scholarships to dietetic students, organize foot care trainings, running knowledge management in diabetes care forum, supporting the formation of personnel working with diabetes network, etc.
